Sand image This sand is from the foreshore of Alki Beach, Seattle, Washington. The larger white and pink pieces are fragments of mollusk shells. The microscopic view linked below shows that rock fragments (polymineralic grains) are an abundant component of this sand - there's a very nice example on the right side slightly below the middle of that image.
