Figure A-2. Travertine from southeastern Idaho. Microcrystalline clusters form "shrubs" (one is outlined) or dendritic masses that are commonly attributed to bacterial precipitation. Areas of coarser microcrystalline calcite are present also (M). Clear calcite (C) fills some original pore space between clusters, but more pore spaces (P) remain than in an image of another travertine from Tivoli, Italy.
Photomicrograph was taken in plane-polarized light; field of view is 2.1 mm wide. Bonneville County, Idaho, U.S.A.; thin section EI7-2. Sample courtesy of Idaho Travetine Comapny, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
