Figure B-10. Soda-straw stalactites hanging from the underside of a concrete structure in Augusta, Georgia. Note the drops of water hanging from the bottoms of the soda straws. Water flows out of the overlying material (in this case, fractured concrete) and down through the hollow tube of CaCO3, precipitating more CaCO3 at the tip. Another image in this collection shows cross-sections of larger stalagmites in which the original soda-straw canals are still visible.
